Cluster 6: Department of Plant Biology, Ecology and Earth Sciences of the University of Extremadura (UEX)

The University of Extremadura is the main public university in Extremadura, with four campuses, over 24,000 students and 2,400 researchers. Its Department of Plant Biology, Ecology and Earth Sciences has strong expertise in phytoremediation and plant breeding, combining molecular, physiological and field approaches. Research focuses on crop resilience to abiotic and biotic stresses, biostimulants, transgenic lines and remediation of soils contaminated by heavy metals and xenobiotics, supported by national and regional competitive projects.

University of Extremadura will apply its expertise in phytoremediation, plant physiology, and breeding to support ecosystem restoration and climate-smart perennial crop development. Activities include field trials on heavy-metal-contaminated soils, evaluation of plant responses to toxic compounds, micropropagation of elite parental lines, and identification of genetic polymorphisms for selecting resilient genotypes, contributing to zero-pollution strategies, biodiversity protection, and sustainable agriculture.
