Smarter buildings as part of the energy system for increased efficiency and flexibility – Societal Readiness Pilot

The Horizon Europe call HORIZON-CL5-2026-02-D4-02 focuses on integrating smarter buildings into the energy system to increase energy efficiency and flexibility, with a strong emphasis on societal readiness. The topic aims to reduce buildings’ energy demand and operational CO₂ emissions by deploying smart technologies that integrate renewable energy sources, energy storage, and building energy management systems. Projects must ensure user-friendly solutions that improve comfort, acceptance, and trust among diverse social groups, including vulnerable users. Demonstrations are required in at least three pilots covering different climatic zones, building types, and technical systems. The call adopts an interdisciplinary approach, with mandatory social sciences and humanities expertise to address user needs and societal uptake. The call opens on 16 September 2025 and closes on 17 February 2026.
